I’ve been described many times in my life, usually disparagingly, as a “jack of all trades, master of none.” I know so many others must feel the same way, even when they know inside that those avocations outside their stated area of expertise breathe fresh air into their lives. David Epstein’s book explores how depth without sufficient breadth is a recipe for stagnation, while having diverse interests can better inform us and improve our problem-solving capabilities. Further, in the world of sports and health, the exploration of varied pursuits creates more adept athletes, not only in young people (as I explored in my chapter contribution to Complete Triathlon Guide), but also in adults. Realize it’s not a problem to explore, it’s an asset.
